Though we believe that your merits in an interview that should be the defining factor which gets you employed, there is no denying that appearance plays an important role in any hire.
Because the employer only has a limited time to make decisions on whether you’re suited to the job and the company, they will have to factor in the way you look. Presenting yourself in a clean, neat appropriate way emphasises effort and care. Showing up in your Sunday worst could be interpreted as an apathetic approach to the role.
You’re not just dressing for your potential employer, you’re dressing for yourself as well. Looking sharp can have a positive impact on how you perceive yourself, and therefore how you come across in the interview
We’ve outlined the key things to keep in mind when dressing to get the job:
#1 Research the company’s culture.
Before you go out and buy a new suit, make sure you know what the workplace environment is like at the company you’re applying to. Fortunately, Instagram and Facebook, and the focus on workplace cultures has made it possible for those curious to peek inside most office spaces. More formal and traditional workplaces will opt for suits and smart shoes, and dressing down could immediately dismiss you from consideration. Start-ups and most new-age companies tend to adopt a smart casual dress code, and overdressing for this kind of interview could end up making you look like a out of place. In saying this, there is still a standard of dressing smart – even if other employees in the office are dressed super casual.

#2 It’s the details that count.
It can often be the smaller details that indicate whether someone is dressed appropriately for the interview. There’s no point in wearing a nice suit if your shoes are scuffed. Make sure that you polish your shoes. Your clothes shoes be clean and crease free for all jobs. If you can’t do this yourself at home, the dry cleaners can do this quickly and fairly affordably. Hold back on the jewellery – a watch, and anything thats . Both guys and girls should have clean cut nails. Don’t overwhelm your interviewer with your perfume or cologne. You’ll be surprised at how little things can leave lasting impressions on other people.
#3 Look sharp, but be comfortable.
Forbes says invest in a “power outfit” – and we agree – although it doesn’t have to cost you your first pay check. Go for clean, modern, simple cuts, in white, navy, grey or black. Dressing smart is important, but don’t wear things that aren’t comfortable, and aren’t really you. If you don’t wear heels, don’t choose your interview as the best time to trial them (they’re awkward at the best of times, and brutally painful at the worst!). Avoid tight fitting clothes (both for guys and girls), and don’t wear anything too loud or out there that will distract the interviewer from conversation.
#4 There’s more to dressing well than an outfit.
Above all, your body language is going to the thing employers interpret the most. So if you imagine that you’re communicating with your body just as much as your voice, you need to make sure these two things are working in alignment with each other. Good posture, eye contact and smiling are all essential to showing that you’re communicable and a positive attribute to the workplace. Trying keep too many things in mind, while also trying to remember all the prep work you’ve done for the company, your own work history and major selling points all at once can be slightly overwhelming. So one last thing that we’ll pin as being the most important is REMEMBER TO BREATHE. Slow things down, stay calm. The interviewer knows you’re a little nervous and it shows that you’re excited about the job.
