Legal Internship Cover Letter Example

As a law student with limited work experience, it can be extremely difficult to set yourself apart from other candidates. Especially in today’s highly competitive job market. However a creative, energetic, well written cover letter can be a great tool to help secure your dream legal internship.

Cover letters accompany CVs, and therefore should be concise, well-structured, persuasive and grammatically perfect. Cover letters add the flesh to the CV skeleton, and provide applicants with the opportunity to demonstrate their expertise, knowledge and passion for the subject. Whilst highlighting unique characteristics and qualities that an employer would deem interesting and desirable when choosing to employ you as an intern at their firm.

When composing your cover letter, ensure that you tailor the cover letter to each individual law firm’s specialities. Hiring managers want to be wowed with your knowledge of the firm, therefore we recommend extensive research prior to writing your cover letter.

Legal internships provide an opportunity for graduates to increase their knowledge of the subject, and to gain hands-on experience and get a glimpse of the day-to-day tasks of their chosen career paths. Remember that your cover letter has the chance to create a powerful first impression, so take the chance to persuade the potential employer to hire you. Lucas Brown
Company name

Dear Mr Brown,

I am a highly motivated and ambitious Law undergraduate currently coming to the end of my first year at Manchester University. I am looking to broaden my experience in the industry by joining a summer internship programme. Your highly praised internship scheme is, in my opinion, the perfect fit for the skills and knowledge I have acquired from my degree course.

I am a tenacious and enthusiastic individual with a focus on achieving the highest standards both personally and academically. I am aware that your company’s reputation as a frontrunner in the legal profession means that your intern programme is in high demand but I truly believe that my temperament, willingness to learn and excel in all areas of the business would be a beneficial asset to your company.

I am confident in my ability to understand a broad range of legal practices with a particular focus on criminal law. I gained experience during my A levels, working for a local law firm, where I assisted in preparing papers for court, drafting legal documents and arranging meetings with clients. I found this an invaluable learning environment and it compounded my desire to pursue a career in law.

I would love the opportunity to discuss the possibility of joining your internship programme as well as the value I feel I could provide in return. I have enclosed my CV and very much hope to meet you in the near future.

Yours sincerely,

Your Name.
