My passion for sustainability and the environment led me to study geography at university and now as a final year student it is driving me to pursue a career in the environmental sector. I have demonstrated my drive to succeed in this sector, through seeking out my own UK-based and international opportunities with an environmental focus. These experiences have taught me a range of useful skills that I will carry forward into all future opportunities.

I have learnt to manage my time effectively, prioritise tasks and set myself goals and deadlines. This was particularly important whilst working as a Social Impact Analyst Intern at Green Revolutions. This role required me to work individually; it was therefore essential to set goals and deadlines for myself to ensure I completed the task on time with sufficient scope. I proved my ability to do this as I successfully finished my social impact report to a high standard before the end date of my internship.

This internship, along with my experience in retail, taught me the importance of building and maintaining relationships. Such skills were vital when organising and conducting customer interviews. I had to ensure that interviewees could trust me when giving answers to questions; I therefore created a comfortable atmosphere, being friendly, polite and professional. I am building on these skills in my placement at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. During this placement, I am conducting staff interviews to gain feedback from a campaign I have implemented. This will enable me to create an action plan to increase staff engagement in sustainability.
My aforementioned placement and internship, along with working on my dissertation at university, have enabled me to develop the ability to critically analyse large datasets. During my internship I conducted an online customer survey, using the results to calculate statistics, such as carbon emission savings. I linked results to literature, highlighting the company’s current and potential impact. This formed the basis of my social impact report, which is now used by the company to attract investors.

I have undertaken a variety of experiences that have taught me to be adaptable. This was particularly important when interning in Beijing, which was an incredibly different working environment to what I had so far experienced in the UK. Additionally, I have volunteered in Ecuador and Morocco, and have therefore become used to adapting to different environments and cultures. I enjoy the challenge of adapting to different working styles and learning about different cultures.

I believe that these skills will be useful in all future experiences. I want to move forward with my passion for sustainability before going on to study Masters. I believe that this is a hugely important sector due to the adverse consequences of climate change that are becoming ever more prominent. It is important to engrain sustainability into our society before it is too late. We need to make a change to create a more sustainable future for our world and I want to be part of this.
