About British Chinese Project

The British Chinese Project (BC Project) is a non-profit organisation that seeks to elevate the presence of the UK Chinese community in British society and politics. We are a small team of passionate professionals and volunteers, aiming to achieve a fair, inclusive and just democracy for the UK Chinese - we believe the Chinese people can become a vital part of a tolerant and multi-cultural Britain.

Since our formation in 2006, we have sought to give a voice to a community so often derided as the “silent minority”. The Chinese are arguably the most politically isolated and disenfranchised ethnic minority in the UK. They are now the third largest ethnic group in Britain, and are the fastest growing. Yet, their influence in British society and politics is almost non-existent. There is, and never has been, an MP of Chinese descent. Fewer than 30% of Chinese people eligible to vote in elections actually exercise this right. There is a scarcity of British Chinese faces in media, governance or positions of responsibility. And, the unique problems and concerns of the UK Chinese are rarely given any attention.

The BC Project aims to change this.

Through educational schemes, community outreach and political representation, BC project has sought to redress the political and societal imbalances. But there is still much work to be done.

2014-2015 is a huge year for BC Project, with the upcoming General Elections in May 2015. We believe this could be the year we finally see an MP of Chinese descent voted into Parliament. If we can achieve this, it would be a monumental moment in the history of the Chinese community, and, we hope, a springboard for future success.

We therefore have set ambitious, yet attainable, goals for the year ahead. We want to see 150,000 additional Chinese people registered to vote in the 2015 elections. We want the Chinese voter turnout to be the highest of any ethnic minority in the UK (it is currently the lowest). And, we will aim to give our full backing to the Chinese candidates standing in the 2015 General Election - in the hope that we see our first ever Chinese MP!

In order to achieve these goals, we are looking to take on full time staff, who we hope can be part of a famous and historic year in the Chinese communities’ history.
